The Official Top 5 Soundcloud Mash Ups Of All-Time
During what was seemingly the stone ages of streaming (2012-2017), Soundcloud was THE thing. The musical world hinged in the balance with users like "DJ EARWORM" publishing mash ups of popular songs.
I am writing this from Elsewhere Espresso on 6th St and 1st Ave. This is officially my favorite coffee shop in the East Village. I am drinking a cold brew. It is 73 degrees and sunny, and the breeze is a cooling reminder of the impending doom of winter.
Editor’s Note: Jack is not condoning the use of foul language in any of these songs and is not held responsible for the foul language used throughout. That’s just Soundcloud life.
Do you remember the first time you heard an EDM song mixed with a rap hit from the 2000s? Because I do. I was in Erik Strzempek’s car headed to a Montini Catholic High School football game. The crew had just decided that we would get a little buzz going prior to the game via Jose Cuervo tequila that Erik had siphoned into a used Ice Mountain water bottle. This was our version of bottle service.
As we turned the corner, Erik said those fateful words that would change my life for good. I was about to be thrusted into a musical age that would define my social habits and serotonin levels for the next decade:
“Have you guys heard this?”
#5: We Dem Boyz - Hyperparadise Edit
This song has been blasted from dorm rooms, frat parties, high school basements, and potentially snuck its way into a few bar mitzvahs. I just can’t even begin to fathom the level of musical instinct to know that Wiz Khalifa and Flume would be an unstoppable duo capable of setting the tone to about any event. Why doesn’t every single professional sports team run out to this song? When the beat drops I feel like I could rise up and dunk a basketball. Like how you hear those stories of parents being able to lift cars to save their children. That’s how I feel when I listen to “We Dem Boyz - Hyperparadise Edit”.
#4: No Sleep for Kanye - Wiz Khalifa x The Chainsmokers
Clearly Wiz Khalifa had a stranglehold on the music industry at this time. He was getting mashed up into oblivion. His party-forward lyrics and up-beat tempo made him PRIME for a good EDM mash up to fist pump to in a sweaty bar.
I also want to note that being a college DJ would potentially be the easiest thing of all time. You have infinity mash ups at your disposal on Soundcloud. Just make sure you pay for premium or you’ll be listening to 30 seconds ads every other song.
#3: Stuntin’ Like Mufasa - Lil Wayne & Lion King
I listened to this song for 25 straight days in the Fall of 2017. I had just moved into the frat house, and I was of legal drinking age in Champaign, IL (19 years old, iykyk). I think we can all relate to the feeling of pure independence when you can use your own ID to get into a bar. No longer am I Joey, the 24 year old from South Carolina. I’m Jack, the 19 year old from Lombard, IL, and I’m stuntin’ like mufasa.
Bonus: this song wins the award for “Most Nae’Nae’-able”. What I mean by that, is this song provides the most seamless opportunities to “Nae Nae”. I know this because I just hit the “Nae Nae” inside the coffee shop. The barista turned and said “Stuntin’ Like Mufasa?” Yup.
#2 - Ookay x Post Malone - Thief x White Iverson
This is one of those songs where you just read the mash up and don’t even have to listen. It’s a gas tank banger show. Thief by Ookay was a particularly popular EDM song when I was in high school. Additionally, as a white basketball player, I was listening to White Iverson regularly. As a result, when I heard this mash up at the Delta Tau Delta Syllabus Week Rush Kick Off Party, I knew there was something special here. When I hear this song, it is like a Pavlov’s Dog-esque reaction. I start tasting Blueberry Vodka mixed with Sprite. Just an all-timer.
And now, the #1 Soundcloud Mash Up of all time. And I don’t think it is particularly close. This is the undisputed greatest mash up off all time, and maybe one of the all-time great pieces of music, period.
#1 - Wonderwall x Tremor
With Oasis being back, this is rather timely. This song had an absolute chokehold on the college community, similar to your “Mo Bamba” or “God’s Plan” type songs. But this one was a mash up! It is very difficult for a mash up to take over the main stage and hold the coveted position of being the midnight song request at the college bar, The Red Lion. I recall the crowd physically shaking the building from this song. The infrastructure was all over the place. All thanks to this absolute ballad.
I hope this list brought you back to simpler times. It was a blast being able to hop into my old Soundcloud to track down the all time greats. Just a beautiful sight to see my Soundcloud profile picture is an action shot of me playing high school basketball. Poetic.
